MYST 139: Get Obsessed!

What is an obsession?According to Merriam-Webster:

According to Merriam-Webster: a persistent disturbing preoccupation with an often unreasonable idea or feeling;

According to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-V):

  1. recurrent and persistent thoughts, impulses, or images that are experienced, at some time during the disturbance, as intrusive and inappropriate and that cause marked anxiety or distress
  2. the thoughts, impulses, or images are not simply excessive worries about real-life problems
  3. the person attempts to ignore or suppress such thoughts, impulses, or images, or to neutralize them with some other thought or action
  4. the person recognizes that the obsessional thoughts, impulses, or images are a product of his or her own mind (not imposed from without as in thought insertion)

Sounds bad, right?

Not always.

  1. I am going to add something that I have found. The answer at least for me is not eating processed foods. Now let me explain, processed food to me is any food that has ingredients in it that look like they came out of a chemistry lab.
    I have found out that if I stay away from those processed foods, I will not over eat I will become full even before I reach my calorie limit for the day. My body will tell me that I am full as if I eat too much processed foods then I will over eat.
    For me it even works when eating out. I went to a buffet Saturday and my stomach told me I was full long before I would normally be full.
    I have come to believe that obesity is due to our food industry creating foods that make us want to eat more. They have done this by creating so called foods that change our brains and hormones so we know longer know when we are full.

    • Charles, I can’t argue against that. I think you know how I feel about “real food” versus “fat-free/sugar-free/diet foods”. But it is a little easier for me, since I cook most of the meals that my wife and I eat. When I grocery shop, most of the cart is full of foods from the periphery of the store “fresh and frozen produce, fresh and frozen meats/poultry/fish, cheeses/yogurts and if I buy breads, I will buy bread baked locally. About the only foods that I buy from the middle of the store are my starches (rice/pasta/polenta/grits/quinoa/couscous/barley.) And coffee.

      When you buy prepared foods, it almost always has hidden sugars, fats, salts and other ingredients designed to make us eat more. I think I need to do a show about processed/prepared foods. That might be a good topic!

      Thanks!
