MYST 143: Bad Habits

What bad habit is preventing your success? I’ll tell you about one of my bad habits. This is a multi-generation habit, but I was able to break it.

Which bad habits are affecting you?

MYST 142: What is food?

At the very basic level, food is energy and nutrients. It is what keeps our bodies functioning and growing. That is a pretty simple way of viewing food, but it is accurate.

But how do we treat food? Like it is a bandage, our counselor, our security blanket, and proof of our respect and love for others. Worse, we teach our children those same bad habits. Why are they bad habits?

They are bad habits because we misuse food for purposes that food just cannot perform.

MYST 141: Breakfasts Are the Most Important Meal? No.

We all know that breakfast is the most important meal of the day, right? It jump-starts our metabolism and is the key to weight loss success!

Well, not so much, really.

MYST 140 : Cheat Meals

Of course, I never cheat when I log my food!

Do you have “cheat meals” or “cheat days” in your diet plan? Stop! You are reducing your chance of long term success!

I don’t mean “stop eating foods not on your diet plan” but rather “stop calling them cheat days.” You are setting yourself up for failure if you need to have cheat days in order to stay on your path. And at the same time, you are setting up your scapegoat for your eventual failure.

MYST 139: Get Obsessed!

What is an obsession?According to Merriam-Webster:

According to Merriam-Webster: a persistent disturbing preoccupation with an often unreasonable idea or feeling;

According to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-V):

  1. recurrent and persistent thoughts, impulses, or images that are experienced, at some time during the disturbance, as intrusive and inappropriate and that cause marked anxiety or distress
  2. the thoughts, impulses, or images are not simply excessive worries about real-life problems
  3. the person attempts to ignore or suppress such thoughts, impulses, or images, or to neutralize them with some other thought or action

Sounds bad, right?

Not always.

MYST 138 Stress Eating

Stress eating is a very common reaction to life’s stressors. It happens to almost everyone. It certainly happens to me! But how do we control stress eating?

The most basic method is to reduce the stress that is pushing us to eat. I realize that is easier said than done, but there are four common stressors–financial, health, family and career–and each can be handled. This is NOT an easy problem to correct, but ignoring it will not make the stress go away.

MYST 137 I Can’t Help You

Have you ever thought this?

Have you ever thought this?

Everyone needs help, and the first step in finding it is asking for it. I want to help everyone, but I can’t. I don’t know what your problems are. I don’t know if I am giving you ideas that you already know (and therefore am boring you to tears) or saying things are absolutely wrong for you (and am therefore making you angry and frustrated.)

Please give me feedback on the website, either in writing or via voice message, so that this show is as helpful as possible!

MYST 136 Summertime Challenges

Do these images evoke a feeling of summertime? If you were present, would the sounds and smells trigger the need to eat?

Maybe you plan to simply avoid all these temptations. That is a valid choice, but remember–there are consequences to every choice. Listen to learn why I think total avoidance is a bad idea.
